Mandela University Forestry Association (MUFA)

WHAT IS MUFA?

The Mandela University Forestry Association is an association at the Nelson Mandela University, George campus that governs all Forestry, Wood Technology, and Veldfire Management students registered at Nelson Mandela University.

MISSION AND VISION

Our mission is to offer diverse range of educational and recreational experiences to all our members for a sustainable future.

Our vision is to be a dynamic forestry association that is recognized for its excellence in leadership, progressive student development and facilitating opportunities through cohesive engagement between students, the industry and community.

AFFILIATIONS

The MUFA is affiliated with the George campus Students Representative Committee (SRC) and is recognized as a registered society of institution. MUFA has also been an ordinary member of the International Forestry Students Association since 2002 to date.

In some of our events we have collaborated with other societies like the Green Campus Initiative by the Nature Conservation students and the Agric Society run by Agricultural Science students.

EVENTS

MUFA has several constitutional events that must be conducted each year including the first-year welcoming event, at least 2 alien vegetation operations on campus, and the third-year farewell function. The committee must also facilitate the driver’s license program for first-year students.

PAST EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES FOR 2024

The association was recognised at the Nelson Mandela University Student Governance & Development Awards Ceremony, where it was honoured as the Academic Society of the Year for 2024 at the George Campus. It was also acknowledged alongside other distinguished associations of the university.

Below are a selection of captivating images showcasing the highlight events hosted by the association throughout the year. These visuals offer a glimpse into the memorable experiences and milestones that defined our journey in 2024. Accompanying each image is a brief reflection on the event, showcasing its significance of each event.

  • First-year welcoming event

This event serves as an introduction for first-year forestry students, welcoming them to the course and providing an overview of the forestry field, its expectations, and what is required of each student.

  • Hacking – Removing alien invasive plants on campus

The event focused on identifying and removing non-native plant species that threatened local ecosystems. Participants helped restore biodiversity by clearing invasive plants, contributing to environmental sustainability
