Change the world

School of Natural Resource Management

George Campus also has a long history in quality Natural Resource Management education and is a firm favourite of students who study forestry, nature conservation and agriculture. Game ranch management is an exciting new addition to our campus and complements the integrated management of our natural resources.

Game Ranch Management is the wise management and utilisation of renewable wildlife resources to ensure a sustainable game and ecotourism industry. There is an increasing awareness that South Africa is a major international wildlife destination catering for all tastes, from game viewing to bagging the BIG 5. This has stimulated a growing interest in game ranching as a viable farming venture and career. The aim of the Nature Conservation Department, in conjunction with the Agriculture Department at George Campus, is to be a leader in wildlife management education and technology. We aim to be a significant player in the growth and development of the southern African game industry, providing internationally recognised students for the industry.

What Do Game Ranch Managers Do?

Our students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary for a career in game ranch management and related fields. The main emphasis of the game ranch manager is to manage natural resources and wildlife populations by integrating human and economic resources to maintain sustainable productivity.

Career Opportunities

Career opportunities include: game ranch managers, wildlife managers, extension officers, professional hunters, wildlife guides and safari outfitters. Game ranchers will work mainly on private game ranches, game farms and nature reserves. Opportunities will also be available to manage ecotourism ventures in National Parks, provincial nature conservation departments, and properties belonging to regional services councils and certain municipalities.

The Game Ranch Management course is also available at our Port Elizabeth campus.
